About Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation, Inc.

Jonathan Larson, the creator of the Broadway musical RENT, lived for many years on his meager earnings as a waiter while struggling for recognition as a composer/playwright. The occasional commissions and grants he received not only supplemented his income, but perhaps just as importantly, boosted his spirits with the psychological rewards that such acknowledgement provides. Shortly after Jon s death from an undiagnosed aortic aneurysm in 1996, the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation was created, to provide similar financial assistance and encouragement to emerging composers, lyricists and bookwriters, and to nonprofit theatres with a commitment to the developement of new musical theatre artists. The Foundation is one of the few places that individual creative artists in the performing arts can go to apply for direct financial assistance.
