Tar Heel CDC was founded in April 1999 out of a growing need to seriously address a need to improve substandard housing conditions and to improve homeownership opportunities for low income families in coastal North Carolina. Statistics show that even though the Piedmont and western region of our state have shared in the U.S. economic boom, regional disparities exists and coastal NC has not shared in that growth. Because of the devastation of 1999 hurricanes, Coastal NC is now suffering poor housing conditions at astronomical proportions. Many family lives were destroyed when they lost homes,health and jobs. The hardest hit by this devastation were low income families who could least afford it.
