Brunswick Family Assistance Agency has been serving low-income families in Brunswick County, North Carolina since 1981. We have expanded over the years to address unmet needs in our community. We act as a broker for services provided by Interchurch groups in our county, we provide help with rent or mortgage payments, utilities, and other unmet needs. We coordinate with the local welfare department and health departments and work with other area non-profits to provide the best services to our clients. We distribute USDA surplus commodities, we have a food pantry and a children s pantry (clothing, school supplies, baby needs, some children s furniture). We operate a Christmas basket program with food baskets for Christmas dinner and gifts for children and seniors. We have a Hispanic Outreach program funded by Smart Start and the Partnership for Children to help Hispanic families find services in our community, and to help the community serve Hispanic families more effectively. We are a United Way agency and depend on individual and corporate contributions as well as other grant funds. We have helped out in disasters by distributing disaster food and helping with disaster recovery by distributing funds for emergency needs of families impacted by area disasters. Six hurricanes have impacted our county in the three-year period from 1995 to 1999. BFAA is the only non-governmental county wide human services agency in Brunswick County, a rural area with little industry and high poverty. While we enjoy beautiful beaches and over 40 golf courses, much of our county is swampland, with a population very isolated. The area is growing very quickly, and services have difficulty keeping up with the increasing needs. Our agency has very few employees and depends on 50 to 100 volunteers to help provide necessary services.
